Appearances/Conventions
Come hear Corry speak on topics ranging from particle physics to scientific inventions to writing workshops. New appearances will be added as they are scheduled. Go here for previous appearances.
WorldCon in Reno, NV. August 18-21, 2011.
Solo Presentation:
Fri 15:00-16:00, How Do Particle Accelerators Work?
With recent excitement about the Large Hadron Collider in
Geneva, particle physics has gotten a lot of press. But how do particle accelerators
work? What do they accelerate and what can we learn from their collisions? Hear a Ph.D. physicist teach the basics of accelerator
technology (no physics background required!) and answer your questions about
the massive machines used to study the smallest stuff in nature.
Group Discussion Panels:
Fri 11:00 - 12:00, Many Styles of Writers Workshops.
Writers workshops and critique groups have many shapes and forms, from weekly
meetings of local writers to annual sessions lasting days or weeks.
Writers and workshop leaders discuss what works for them.
Fri 17:00 - 18:00, Applied Quantum Mechanics: The Ultimate Mind Trip.
Quantum mechanics has always been a mind trip. Particles altering
their behavior based on what other particles will do. Particles that are
in multiple places at once or that can suddenly tunnel through a barrier
and appear elsewhere. But the trip can get even stranger as we apply this knowledge.
Quantum mechanics is no longer just about the subatomic universe.
Sat 10:00 - 11:00, SF Physics Myths.
The panel looks at scientific misconceptions that authors have
inadvertently promoted to the extent that they have become "common knowledge".
Sat 16:00-17:00, The Awesomeness of Space: A
Discussion with Young Fans.
Sat 17:00 - 18:00, The Future in Physics: How Close Are We to Time Travel or
Breaking the Light Barrier?
SteamCon in Bellevue, WA. October 14-16, 2011.
Schedule TBD.
World Fantasy Convention in San Diego, CA. October 27-30, 2011.
